Член консервативной партии Британии или человек, который поддерживает эту партию. Слово Tory употреблялось в XVII в. по отношению к обедневшим, разорившимся ирландцам, которые жили вне закона под английским владычеством. Это слово образовалось от ирландского слова toraidhe, что означало беглец, преступник (от toir — преследовать). Одно время это слово довольно часто применялось к преступникам и бунтовщикам любого сорта, а во время политических беспорядков 1680 г. оно применялось как оскорбительное прозвище тех, кто поддерживал Джеймса (Якова), герцога Йоркширского, будущего Якова II, как наследника престола.
